"Star Wars III: Revenge of the Sith" Chinese Mistranslations

Slang and Dialect Humor

From , former About.com Guide

A Chinese bootleg DVD rushed to the public during the theatrical release of "Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith" shows numerical video codes superimposed over a less than pristine transfer of the film. The real attraction, however, is the befuddling subtitles, returning the foreign translation of the original English into Chinese back into an all-new skewed English.

Take the famous "Star Wars" prologue, for example. "A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away" is deciphered as "Long time ago in the faraway galaxy." That's somewhat goofy, but even more so when you notice the original words are right there on the screen with the odd and unnecessary subtitled translation.

Blogger Matthew in Beirut presents a collection of screenshots snatched from the snatched movie. The Chinese Engrish, as similar items have become known, contains a smattering of adult language.

My pal raves in appreciation of the gallery:

"Far huge amusement in our laughing go go go time. Ha!

"Frank, or as it would say in the subtitle, Riks"
