One of my earliest toddler memories is watching the original "King Kong" movie on television and the big guy has remained the gorilla my dreams (to borrow a Bugs Bunny pun). With the impending release of Peter ("The Lord of the Rings") Jackson's mammoth cinematic remake, I'm becoming increasingly atwitter.
Perhaps, my lifelong fascination with apes is akin to my love for humor. After all, what's more fun than a barrel of monkeys?
Robert Berry at retroCRUSH touches on the critters with a devilish 2004 countdown for "The Year of the Monkey." I think he may have been a tad premature because 2005's Kong is sure to unleash a furious pop culture frenzy extending into the foreseeable future. "The Fifty Coolest Apes of All Time!" includes all of the great serious and silly simians (excepting showbiz marvels of the world The Marquis Chimps and Jerry Lewis). Lance Link, J. Fred Muggs, Cheetah, and Robot Monster are a few of the monkeys on the roster leading to number one. And who might that primary primate be?
I'd tell ya, but if I did, it was beauty that killed the list.
