THE MIKE DURRETT SHOW

Special Series

Humor Daily Surprise!

Today's Episode:

Dorky Dancing
or
I'm Taking an Animated Dance Page to the Prom

A couple of months ago, I innocently linked to The Hampster Dance as our Daily Surprise Web site selection. I remember saying to myself, "Moose Lips, nobody will care to see this. It's not really funny. It's just goofy."

And, then, using my strong editorial skills and integrity, I put it online so I could go Sleepytown.

I wouldn't have given The Hampster Dance much more thought, except its very annoying and repetitive musical snippet kept performing incessantly inside my head. It got so bad, at one point, two of my demons moved out.

"Dee-dee dah dee dah doh doh," it always begins, and a few seconds later, it begins again. I'm not sure who sings the tune. I suspect it's the late Roger Miller. It's a blessing he's gone because I would have to harm him.

If you haven't seen this page, it's nothing more than a passel of animated GIFs, supposedly hamsters, bouncing and strutting in time to the music. It goes on forever, literally. And, okay, yes, a couple of the little fur balls are kind of cute prancing around on the monitor. Although, I get better results hooking up the marionette strings to to my cats.

The cats prance and shriek "Dee-dee MEROWL dah dog dog." (I'm pretty certain of that. They have such tiny voices, it's hard to tell.)

Over the next several weeks, I started reading about The Hampster Dance and seeing it show up on many other Web pages. Before I knew it, I uncovered The Hampster Blast, a handy little Shockwave parody allowing you to assassinate the cartoon critters; so I made it the Daily Surprise, too.

Last week, The Dancing Cow Page appeared.

Folks, the floodgate has opened. Everyone with Web space seems to be cashing in. Animated dance pages are multiplying faster than hamsters with virtually all conceivable species represented, excepting perhaps, the court of Judge Judy.

So, allow us to keep you on the cutting edge with a series of the best of the rest....

The Dick Van Dyke Dance
Dick represents us humans in my favorite (so far) of the new breed of animated dance page parodies. That's the good news.

The bad news is I can feel it in my bones, at this very moment, someone is devising an evil Jerry Van Dyke dance page.
