A Funny Site of the Day with Mike Durrett

What would happen if the narrator from TV's longest-running holiday special, Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer (1964), couldn't go on? That's what befalls the wise old Burl Ives-like snowman during his annual telling of The Abominable Snowmonster fable to the kindly folks of Christmas Town. He's emotionally depleted following the terrorists' attacks of 9/11.

This visually perfect parody of the Rankin/Bass stop motion animation classic was commissioned and first appeared on NBC's Saturday Night Live in December, 2001. Billed as "A Robert Smigel Filmed Program," the five-minute cartoon was written by Smigel (Triumph the Insult Comic Dog, "TV Funhouse") with contributions from Michael Gordon, Louis CK, Stephen Colbert, and Michelle Saks Smigel.

See the film online, presented in its entirety by the animators' studio, Curious Pictures. The longish download time is more than worth the wait. You'll need the QuickTime plug-in to watch (free copies here).

The Narrator That Ruined Christmas is not for children, containing strong language and adult themes.

It's a wonderful lie.
