A Funny Site of the Day with Mike Durrett

Around 1985, an unexpected envelope arrived from a pal. Inside, there was an audio cassette. I placed it in the machine and listened.

Omigod! What is this?

I howled and rewound the blast again and again, soaking up a terrific behind-the-scenes find. That bootlegged tape is one of my prized possessions and the audio is now available to you, courtesy of the Internet.

In 1953, at the height of their showbiz clout and friendship, young Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis took three minutes before lunch to record radio commercials for their 10th motion picture, "The Caddy." Loose, mischievous, and playing to each other and the crew, they read goofily from the prepared script, adlibbing a spew of expletives at complete odds with their squeaky clean screen images.

This recording is infamous among the movie stars' fans and collectors, but whether you love the team or snub 'em, their outtakes are something, nearly surreal, to behold.

The Caddy advertisementThe first cut on the upcoming page presents the advertising spots in an uninterrupted RealAudio chunk, or select the bite-size WAV clips of the same material, which follow.

Again, the dialogue is beyond crude, but boys will be boys. An added bonus, bittersweet to hear, is the joy and affection Dean and Jerry exude for each other. It would not be long before a legendary feud snowballed into their inevitable professional and personal break-up.

At the bottom of EarthStation1's page of Weirdness sounds, hear comical false-start bloopers made during Lewis' recording session of "Rockabye Your Baby With a Dixie Melody," which became a hit for the comedian early in his solo career.
