At the Movies
with Mike Durrett
"The
Critic"
Television's little seen and
underappreciated movie reviewer, Jay Sherman, relocates to the Internet in this series of
short cartoons based on an early-'90s sitcom unleashed in the satirical tradition of
"The Simpsons."
On his "Coming Attractions" film clip program, "The Critic" disses a parade of parody flicks. Jon Lovitz returns as the voice of the central character. Interestingly, he bears an uncanny physical resemblance to Roger Ebert AND Gene Siskel.
Also back, Al Jean and Mike Reiss, the creative caretakers of earlier incarnations of the animated spoofs, now housed at Shockwave. (Download the necessary Shockwave plug-in here.)
A pre-show plus, while you wait for the Webtoon media to download, is the barrage of on-screen Fun Facts ("Bill Paxton and Bill Pullman are the same man;" "You can get 18 diseases from a movie theatre floor;" "There are no original parts of Cher left.") and Trivia ("Who said 'Life is like a box of chocolates?" Answer: John Goodman).
My assessment?
Two thumbs up, nine lymph nodes in a variety of directions, an upright clavicle, and a spastic colon that means well.
