Born 1905: Ernie Bushmiller, cartoonist, creator of "Nancy." Died 1982.

Born 1912: Gene Kelly, witty dancer, actor, "Anchors Aweigh," "On the Town," "Take Me Out to the Ballgame," "Summer Stock," "An American in Paris," "Singin' in the Rain, TV's "Going My Way," "What a Way to Go!" "40 Carats," "Xanadu." His comedic films as a director include "Singin' in the Rain," "The Tunnel of Love," "Gigot," "A Guide for the Married Man," "Hello, Dolly" and "The Cheyenne Social Club." Died 1996.

1923: Considered radio's first comedians, the Happiness Boys, Ernie Hare and Billy Jones, debuted on the air.

Born 1932: Mark Russell, comedian and political satirist and songwriter.

Born 1934: Barbara Eden, actress, TV's "How to Marry a Millionaire," "All Hands on Deck," "The Brass Bottle," "I Dream of Jeannie," "Harper Valley P.T.A."

Born 1940: Richard Sanders, actor, Les Nessman on "WKRP in Cincinnati."

Born 1949: Shelley Long, improvisational comedian at Second City, actress, "Caveman," "Night Shift," Dianne on "Cheers," "The Money Pit," "Outrageous Fortune," "Troop Beverly Hills," "The Brady Bunch Movie."

1959: Charlie Brown's infant sister, Sally, made her first appearance in the "Peanuts" comic strip.

Born 1970: Jay Mohr, stand-up comedian, actor, "Saturday Night Live," "The Jeff Foxworthy Show," "Jerry Maguire," "Jane Austen's Mafia," "Action," "The Adventures of Pluto Nash," "Last Comic Standing."

1985: Roseanne Barr appeared on her first national television broadcast, "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson."
