Born 1899: P.L. Travers, author, "Mary Poppins" books. Died 1996.

Born 1901: Charles Farrell, actor, leading man in silent films and early talkies, best remembered as Gale Storm's dad, Vern Albright, on TV's early sitcom "My Little Margie." Died 1990.

1930: Betty Boop began her career in the movies. Her first cartoon, Max Fleischer's "Dizzy Dishes," premiered.

Born 1942: David Steinberg, stand-up comedian, actor, "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour," "The End." After years of performing, he moved behind the camera to direct, beginning with a Burt Reynolds film, "Paternity." Born 1958: Amanda Bearse, actress, Marcy on "Married ... With Children." As a TV director, she worked on "Married ... With Children," "Mad TV," "Malcolm & Eddie," "The Tom Show," "Dharma & Greg," "Veronica's Closet," and "Ladies Man" (1999).
