Born 1883: Max Fleischer, animator, teamed with his brother, Dave. Together they made ''Out of the Inkwell,'' Betty Boop, and the early Popeye the Sailor cartoons. Max was Walt Disney's prime competitor in the animation field and an innovator, making cartoons combined with live action footage and 3-D effects. He also created the "Bouncing Ball" series of sing-along cartoons. Died 1972.

1946: Marilyn Monroe made her first motion picture screen test.

Born 1948: Beverly Archer, actress, Iola on "Mama's Family," Gunny on "Major Dad."

Born 1962: Anthony Edwards, actor, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "It Takes Two," "Gotcha!" "Revenge of the Nerds," "The Sure Thing," "How I Got Into College," "Northern Exposure."

Opening in movie theatres: Warner Bros. cartoon "Inki and the Lion" (1941), featuring the first appearance of the little hunter and a mysterious mynah bird ... "Anchors Aweigh" (1945), starring Frank Sinatra, Gene Kelly, and Jerry Mouse ... Bob Hope and Lucille Ball in "Fancy Pants" (1950) ... "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure" (1985) introduced P. to the big screen ... Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter in "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey" (1991) ... "Clueless" (1995) with Alicia Silverstone.
