Born 1902: Richard Rodgers, film and stage composer, writer, "Babes in Arms," "State Fair" (1945), "Oklahoma!" "Carousel," "The King and I," "Cinderella" (1957), "South Pacific," "Flower Drum Song," "The Sound of Music." Died 1979.

Born 1926: Mel Brooks, comedian, writer, actor, film director, producer, "Your Show of Shows," "Get Smart," "The Critic," "The Producers" (1967), "The Twelve Chairs," "Blazing Saddles," "Young Frankenstein," "Silent Movie," "High Anxiety," "History of the World, Part One," "To Be or Not to Be" (1983), "Spaceballs," "Robin Hood: Men in Tights," "Dracula: Dead and Loving It." The reworking of "The Producers" into a Broadway musical-comedy (2001) swept the Tony Awards, winning more trophies than any play in history. Brooks managed what few others have matched, winning the big four, Oscar, Tony, Emmy, and Grammy awards.

Born 1933: Noriyuki "Pat" Morita, stand-up comedian, actor, "Sanford and Son," Arnold on "Happy Days."

Born 1938: John Byner, stand-up comedian, impressionist, actor, "The Steve Allen Comedy Hour," voices of "The Ant and the Aardvark," "The Practice," "Soap," "Bizarre."

Born 1946: Gilda Radner, actress, writer, comedian, "Saturday Night Live," "The Rutles," "Gilda Live," "Hanky Panky," "The Woman in Red," "Haunted Honeymoon." Died 1989. Gene Wilder is her widower.

1951: "The Amos 'N' Andy Show" moved from network radio to television.
