Born 1928: Pierre "Peyo" Culliford, cartoonist, creator of "The Smurfs." Died 1992.

1948: "Romance on the High Seas" opened in movie theatres with singer Doris Day in her first film, one originally slated to star Judy Garland, then Betty Hutton.

Born 1949: Jimmie Walker, stand-up comedian, actor, J.J. on "Good Times," "Bustin' Loose" TV series.

1993: After taping NBC's "Late Night With David Letterman," the host left for greener pastures at CBS.
