Born 1940: John Mahoney, actor, "Tin Men," "Moonstruck," Martin on "Frasier," "Reality Bites," "The Hudsucker Proxy," "She's the One."

1948: "Toast of the Town," an influential variety series for comedians premiered on CBS-TV. It would eventually bear the name of its host as "The Ed Sullivan Show," airing live every Sunday night. Guests on the first program included Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis.

Born 1952: John Goodman, actor, "Raising Arizona," "Punchline," "Roseanne," "King Ralph," Fred in "The Flintstones" (1994), "The Big Lebowski," "O Brother, Where Art Thou," voice of Baloo in "The Jungle Book 2.

Born 1967: Nicole Kidman, actress, "Flirting," "To Die For," "Practical Magic."

Opening in movie theatres: Steven Spielberg's film of Peter Benchley's best-seller, "Jaws" (1975), became a phenomenon. The great white shark tale terrified audiences, but had them laughing about it.
