Born 1895: Hattie McDaniel, actress, appearing in nearly 100 films, spanning from Buckwheat's mother ("Arbor Day") to Mammy in "Gone With the Wind." She also enjoyed success in network radio and early television with the sitcom "Beulah," a k a "The Beulah Show." Died 1952.

Born 1922: Judy Garland, singer, actress, "Love Finds Andy Hardy," "The Wizard of Oz" (1939), "Babes in Arms," "Andy Hardy Meets Debutante," "Strike Up the Band," "Life Begins for Andy Hardy," "Girl Crazy," "Meet Me in St. Louis," "The Harvey Girls," "Easter Parade," "In the Good Old Summertime," "Summer Stock," "Gay Purr-ee." Died 1969. Mother of Liza Minnelli and Lorna Luft.

1963: On "American Bandstand," Ray Stevens sang "Harry the Ape."

Born 1965: Elizabeth Hurley, actress, "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery," "My Favorite Martian" (1999), "Bedazzled" (2000), "Serving Sara."

Opening in movie theatres: Barney Bear debuted in "The Bear That Couldn't Sleep" (1939) ... Woody Allen's "Love and Death" (1975) ... "Big Business" (1988) with Bette Midler and Lily Tomlin as two sets of twins.
