Born 1938: Richard Benjamin, actor, ("He and She," "Goodbye Columbus," "Portnoy's Complaint," "Catch-22," "The Sunshine Boys," "House Calls"), film director ("My Favorite Year," "The Money Pit," "My Stepmother Is an Alien").

1955: After 23 years on network radio, Jack Benny aired his final live broadcast, turning his attention to the television version of his program.

1992: Johnny Carson bid farewell in a solo episode of "The Tonight Show." His era of the series concluded after three decades on NBC.
