Born 1901: Gary Cooper, Oscar winning-actor, "Design for Living," "Mr. Deeds Goes to Town," "Ball of Fire," "Along Came Jones," "Love in the Afternoon." Died 1961.

Born 1922: Darren McGavin, actor, "The Delicate Delinquent," "A Christmas Story," "Billy Madison."

Born 1930: Totie Fields, comedian. Died 1978.

1936: Popeye the Sailor's "What -- No Spinach?" opened in theatres.

Born 1951: Robert Hegyes, actor, Epstein on "Welcome Back, Kotter."

Born 1954: Amy Heckerling, film director, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "Look Who's Talking," "Clueless."

Born 1969: Traci Lords, actress, "Cry-Baby," "Roseanne."

1987: Shelley Long exited "Cheers," after her final performance as a regular in the series.
