Born 1892: Mary Pickford, actress and the most popular movie star of the silent era. Her comedies include "Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm" (1917), "Little Annie Rooney" (1925), "My Best Girl" (1927), and "The Taming of the Shrew" (1929). Died 1979.

Born 1921: Alfie Bass, actor, "A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum" (1966), "Are You Being Served?" (1979, Harry Goldberg). Died 1987.

Born 1926: Shecky Greene, stand-up comedian.

Born 1946: Stuart Pankin, actor, "Not Necessarily the News" (1983-90), "Dinosaurs" (1991-94, voice of Earl).

1979: "All in the Family" aired its final episode, although star Carroll O'Connor continued in a spinoff sitcom, "Archie Bunker's Place."

1983: "She's cool. He's hot. She's from the Valley. He's not." The Nicolas Cage and Deborah Foreman teen comedy, "Valley Girl," opened in theatres, fer sure.

1992: "Punch Magazine," the British humour publication, ceased operation after 151 years.
