Born 1915: Forrest "Bud" Sagendorf, cartoonist, creator of "Popeye." Died 1994.

Born 1920: Werner Klemperer, actor, Col. Klink in "Hogan's Heroes" (1965-71). Died 2000.

Born 1923: Marcel Marceau, pantomimist, actor, "Barbarella" (1968), "Silent Movie" (1976).

Born 1924: Bill Wendell, announcer, "Late Night With David Letterman" (1982-93), "Late Show With David Letterman" (1993-95). Died 1999.

Born 1929: Mort Drucker, cartoonist, "MAD Magazine," specializing in movie and television satires.

Born 1931: William Shatner, actor, crooner, "Howdy Doody" (1954, Ranger Bob), "Airplane II: The Sequel" (1982), "Loaded Weapon 1" (1993).

1940: Bing Crosby and Bob Hope's "Road to Singapore" opened in theatres. The popular comedy led to six sequels. According to Internet Movie Database, the film was "originally written as 'Beach of Dreams' for George Burns and Gracie Allen. Later retitled 'Road to Mandalay' for Fred MacMurray and 'Oakie, Jack' before receiving its final title and cast."

Born 1976: Reese Witherspoon, actress, "Pleasantville" (1998), "Election" (1999), "Little Nicky" (2000), "Legally Blonde" (2001), "The Importance of Being Earnest" (2002), "Sweet Home Alabama" (2002).

1977: Young stand-up comic Jay Leno made his first guest appearance on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson."
