Born 1886: Edward Everett Horton, character actor, "Top Hat" (1935), "Shall We Dance" (1937), "Holiday" (1938), "Here Comes Mr. Jordan" (1941), "The Gang's All Here" (1943), "Arsenic and Old Lace" (1944), "Cold Turkey" (1971). Best known today as the narrator of Rocky and Bullwinkle's "Fractured Fairy Tales." Died 1970.

Born 1911: Smiley Burnette, comic actor, singer. He appeared in 80 westerns as Roy Rogers' sidekick, Frog Milhouse. His final role was as Charlie, the train engineer, on "Petticoat Junction" (1963-67). Died 1967.

Born 1926: Peter Graves, actor, "Where's Raymond?" (1953-55), "Texas Across the River" (1966), "The Ballad of Josie" (1967), "Airplane!" (1980), "Airplane II: The Sequel" (1982), "Addams Family Values" (1993), "Men in Black II" (2002). Brother of James Arness.

Born 1938: Carl Gottlieb, actor, "M*A*S*H" (1970), "The Ken Berry 'Wow' Show" (1972); screenwriter, TV's "The Odd Couple" and "The Bob Newhart Show," "Jaws" (1975), "The Jerk" (1979); director, "The Absent-Minded Waiter" (1977), "Hooperman" (1987-89).

1961: Ladies and gentlemen, Poppin' Fresh, the Pillsbury Doughboy, was introduced.

1968: Mel Brooks' "The Producers," his first movie as writer and director, premiered in New York City. Zero Mostel and Gene Wilder starred.

Born 1970: Queen Latifah, actress, "Chicago" (2002), "Bringing Down the House" (2003).
