Born 1895: Samuel "Shemp" Howard, comedian, actor, one of the original The Three Stooges. He left the act in 1930 and was replaced by Curly; in 1946, he rejoined the trio, replacing the ailing Curly. During the intervening years, he appeared in dozens of films, most notable "The Bank Dick" (1940). Brother of Moe and Jerry "Curly" Howard. Died 1955.

Born 1931: Rusty Warren, the "knockers up gal," adult comedian, party song singer.

1939: Walt Disney's Goofy made his first film appearance today in the cartoon "Goofy and Wilbur." Wilbur was a grasshopper.

Born 1949: Patrick Duffy, actor, "Step by Step" (1991-98, Frank).

Born 1951: Kurt Russell, actor, "Follow Me, Boys!" (1966), "The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes" (1969), "Used Cars" (1980), "Overboard" (1987), "Captain Ron" (1992).

1979: Icky professional businessman "Fred Garvin: Male Prostitute" appeared on "Saturday Night Live." Dan Aykroyd and Margot Kidder starred in this classic sketch.
