1781: Sir William Herschel discovered Uranus, launching 200+ years of snickers and about 12 hours of material for "Beavis and Butt-head."

Born 1913: Harold J. Stone, actor, "The Goldbergs" (1952), "I Spy" (1965-68), "The Big Mouth" (1967), "Bridget Loves Bernie" (1972-73).

Born 1914: Bob Weiskopf, comedy writer for Fred Allen, Eddie Cantor, Red Skelton, Danny Thomas, Phyllis Diller, and Carol Burnett. He was also a prolific scriptwriter for television: "I Love Lucy," "Our Miss Brooks," "Make Room for Daddy," "Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour," "Pete and Gladys," "The Lucy Show," "Maude," "All's Fair," "Archie Bunker's Place." He was awarded Emmys for "The Flip Wilson Show" and "All in the Family." Died 2001.

Born 1921: Allan Jaffee, cartoonist and illustrator, "MAD Magazine."

Born 1941: Charo, "cuchi-cuchi" girl, entertainer, "Chico and the Man" (1977-78, Aunt Charo).

Born 1950: William H. Macy, actor, "Down Periscope" (1996), "Fargo" (1996), "Wag the Dog" (1997), "Pleasantville" (1998), "Sports Night" (1999-2000).

Born 1951: Fred Berry, actor, Rerun on "What's Happening!!" (1976-79).

Born 1954: Robin Duke, improv comedian, actress, "SCTV" (1980-81), "Saturday Night Live" (1981-84), "Groundhog Day" (1993), "Multiplicity" (1996).

Born 1955: Glenne Headly, actress, "Doctor Detroit" (1983), "Dirty Rotten Scoundrels" (1988), "Sgt. Bilko" (1996).

Born 1956: Dana Delaney, actress, "HouseSitter" (1992), "Exit to Eden" (1994).

1969: Walt Disney Productions' original Herbie adventure, "The Love Bug," opened in theatres across the U.S., starring Dean Jones, Michele Lee, and Buddy Hackett. (A limited advance release of the film had previously occurred on Dec. 24, 1968.)

Born 1976: Danny Masterson, actor, Steven on "That '70s Show" (1998-).
