Born 1921: Carl Betz, actor, "The Donna Reed Show" (1958-66, Dr. Alex Stone). Died 1978.

Born 1934: Del Close, stand-up comic and a leading proponent of improvisational comedy, primarily at Chicago's The Second City. Died 1999.

Born 1934: Joyce Van Patten, actress, "The Danny Kaye Show" (1963-67), "The Good Guys" (1968-70), "I Love You, Alice B. Toklas!" (1968), "The Don Rickles Show" (1972).

Born 1936: Marty Ingels, comedian, actor, "I'm Dickens, He's Fenster" (1962-63, he's Fenster), "If It's Tuesday, This Must Be Belgium" (1969).

Born 1940: Raul Julia, actor, "The Gumball Rally" (1976), "The Addams Family" (1991, Gomez), "Addams Family Values" (1993). Died 1994.

1953: Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis began shooting "Money from Home," a horse racing comedy based on a Damon Runyon story. It was their only movie filmed in 3-D.

1969: CBS cancelled the controversial "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" series.

Born 1971: Emmanuel Lewis, actor, "Webster" (1983-87).
