Born 1911: Jean Harlow, actress, major sex symbol. Before achieving motion picture stardom, she made three appearances with Laurel and Hardy in 1929's "Double Whoopee," "Liberty," and "Bacon Grabbers." Her feature comedies include "Platinum Blonde" (1931), "Red-Headed Woman" (1932), "Dinner at Eight" (1933), "Bombshell" (1933), "Wife Vs. Secretary" (1936), "Libeled Lady" (1936). Died 1937.

1943: Premiering on radio, "The Milton Berle Show." The comedian hosted several programs during the next 13 years and became a big star on television in 1948.

Born 1943: Roy London, sitcom director, "It's Garry Shandling's Show" (1986-90), "The Larry Sanders Show" (1992-93). Died 1993.

Born 1950: Tim Kazurinsky, actor, writer, remembered as a regular cast member on "Saturday Night Live" (1981-84) and as Cadet Sweetchuck in the "Police Academy" movie series.

Born 1958: Miranda Richardson, actress, "Blackadder II" (1986), "Enchanted April" (1992), "The Evening Star" (1996), "Chicken Run" (2000, voice of Mrs. Tweedy).

Died 1959: Lou Costello, former partner of Bud Abbott, was felled by a heart attack.

Born 1961: Mary Page Keller, actress, "Duet" (1987-89), "The Absent-Minded Professor" (1989), "Baby Talk" (1991-92), "Emeril" (2001).

Born 1970: Julie Bowen, actress, "Happy Gilmore" (1996), "Multiplicity" (1996), "Ed" (2001-, Carol Vessey), "Joe Somebody" (2001).

Movie comedies opening on this day: "Tillie's Punctured Romance" (1928) and "The Fatal Glass of Beer" (1933), both starring W.C. Fields. In 1978, 80-year-old sex kitten Mae West returned in "Sextette," a jaw-dropping bad film. In it, she's on her honeymoon with Timothy Dalton, 32.
