Born 1904: Dr. Seuss (a k a Theodor Geisel), commercial artist and writer known mostly for children's stories, such as "The Cat in the Hat," "Horton Hears a Who!" "How the Grinch Stole Christmas," and "Green Eggs and Ham." In films, he was a force behind the WWII "Private Snafu" cartoons, "Gerald McBoing-Boing" (1950), and "The 5,000 Fingers of Dr. T" (1954). Died 1991.

Born 1914: Martin Ritt, film director, "Pete 'n' Tillie" (1972), "The Front" (1976), "Murphy's Romance" (1985). Died 1990.

Born 1917: Desi Arnaz, actor, musician, "Too Many Girls" (1940), "I Love Lucy" (1951-57, Ricky Ricardo), "The Long, Long Trailer" (1954), "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" (1957-60). He also produced and directed "The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" and "The Mothers-in-Law" (1967-69). Died 1986.

1950: Silly Putty was invented.

1950: Molly Cheek, actress, "It's Garry Shandling's Show" (1986-90), "Harry and the Hendersons" (1991-93), "Family Dog" (1993, voice of Bev), "American Pie" (1999).

Born 1950: Matthew Laurance, actor, "Saturday Night Live" (1980-81), "Duet" (1987-89).

1952: Laraine Newman, actress, "Saturday Night Live" (1975-80), "Perfect" (1985), "Coneheads" (1993), "The Flintstones" (1994).

1964: The Beatles' first movie, "A Hard Day's Night," began production.

Born 1971: Dave Gorman, stand-up comedian.

1977: Future host Jay Leno debuted on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson."
