Born 1883: Victor Fleming, film director, "Bombshell" (1933), "The Wizard of Oz" (1939), and the often comic "Gone With the Wind" (1939). Died 1949.

Born 1899: Norman Taurog, film director, "Huckleberry Finn" (1931), "If I Had a Million" (1932), "Living It Up" (1954, one of six with Martin and Lewis), "Don't Give Up the Ship" (1959, one of two solo Jerry Lewis pictures), and "Blue Hawaii" (1961, one of nine with Elvis Presley). Died 1981.

Born 1923: Hal Cooper, TV director, "The Dick Van Dyke Show," "Gilligan's Island," "I Dream of Jeannie," "That Girl," "The Flying Nun," ""The Brady Bunch," The Mary Tyler Moore Show," "The Odd Couple," "All in the Family," "Sanford and Son," "Maude," "One Day at a Time," "Gimme a Break!" and "Empty Nest."

1935: The first color Mickey Mouse cartoon, "The Band Concert," began playing in theatres, co-starring Donald Duck.

Born 1939: Peter Fonda, actor, "Tammy and the Doctor" (1963).

1940: The animation marvel, "Pinocchio," from Walt Disney, opened in theatres.

Born 1951: Patricia Richardson, actress, "Home Improvement" (1991-99).
