1895: In London, the curtain raised for the first time on Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest."

Born 1905: Thelma Ritter, actress, "The Mating Game" (1951), "The Model and the Marriage Broker" (1951), "Rear Window" (1954), "Pillow Talk" (1959). Died 1969.

Born 1916: Edward Platt, actor, The Chief on TV's "Get Smart" (1965-70). Died 1974.

Born 1921: Hugh Downs, TV host, announcer-sidekick on "The Tonight Show" (1957-62) during the Jack Paar era.

Born 1934: Florence Henderson, musical-comedy performer and actress, always remembered as Carol Tyler-Martin-Brady, the matriarch of "The Brady Bunch" (1969-74).

Born 1948: Jackie Martling, "The Joke Man," dirty gag lover and longtime Howard Stern sidekick.
