Born 1894: Jack Benny, legendary comedian and actor, reigned for decades on network radio and television. His movies include "Charley's Aunt" (1941), "To Be or Not to Be" (1942), and "The Horn Blows at Midnight" (1945). Died 1974.

1895: In London, the curtain raised for the first time on Oscar Wilde's "The Importance of Being Earnest."

Born 1905: Thelma Ritter, actress, "The Mating Game" (1951), "The Model and the Marriage Broker" (1951), "Rear Window" (1954), "Pillow Talk" (1959). Died 1969.

Born 1916: Edward Platt, actor, The Chief on TV's "Get Smart" (1965-70). Died 1974.

Born 1921: Hugh Downs, TV host, announcer-sidekick on "The Tonight Show" (1957-62) during the Jack Paar era.

Born 1934: Florence Henderson, musical-comedy performer and actress, always remembered as Carol Tyler-Martin-Brady, the matriarch of "The Brady Bunch" (1969-74).

Born 1948: Jackie Martling, "The Joke Man," dirty gag lover and longtime Howard Stern sidekick.
