Opening at the movies: "Pardon My Pups" (1934) with Shirley Temple, "The Three Stooges Meet Hercules" (1962) with Larry, Moe, and Curly Joe, and "How to Murder Your Wife," the one with Jack Lemmon as the cartoonist (1965).

Born 1925: Paul Newman, major leading man and sometimes comic actor, most notably in "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" (1969), "The Sting" (1973), "Slapshot" (1977), and as an unbilled guest star in Mel Brooks' "Silent Movie" (1976).

Born 1929: Jules Feiffer, cartoonist and film scribe ("Little Murders," based on his play, and "Carnal Knowledge," both 1971).

Born 1935: Bob Uecker, Major League Baseball catcher turned broadcaster and actor, known for his self-deprecating wit and a hit sitcom, "Mr. Belvedere" (1985-90).

Born 1958: Ellen DeGeneres, stand-up comic and sitcom star (1994-98's "Ellen," 2001's "The Ellen Show").

1998: United States President Bill Clinton denied any wrongdoing with a White House intern, announcing, "I did not have sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky." Looking back, David Letterman named this "The Golden Age of Comedy."
