Emo Philips
I had the big kick of seeing Emo onstage last night. It's hard to pinpoint the gifted stand-up oddity, who bubbles and struggles with eyebrow-raising innocence and loopiness. Emo is sort of a cross between Steven Wright and Henny Youngman and Norman Bates on dope and air hoses.

Jay Leno has been quoted as saying Emo is "the best joke writer in America," and I wouldn't want to argue the point. Most jokes follow a straight line, but his material exists in a parallel universe with the audience left disoriented, shocked and punched into reality. Gag after gag, leisurely Emo drives you down one road, then -- WHAM! -- he hijacks you into an unseen bullet train.

At the link above, a compilation of choice Emo Philips bits, from Quote Geek. Emophiliacs should also visit EmoPhilips.com for the comic's personal page of photographs, tour dates and special online weirdness.

For Emo's site, you'll need Shockwave Flash. Don't have it? Get it here.
