A Funny Site of the Day with your Guide Mike Durrett

The glorious Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer classic returned to theatres in 1998 for what was billed as its first re-release in over 40 years. The movie, in fact, was circulated in the early '70s for kiddie matinees, and has been unspooled on special occasions. Besides, with its television showings and the advent of home video, the film has never been far from sight.

But -- and I can't stress this enough -- you must see "The Wizard of Oz" on the big screen if ever given the chance. As fresh and innocent today as it was in Hollywood's Golden Year, 1939, this superlative musical adventure is laced with wit and warm humor throughout. It's a prime example of what's missing in modern American motion pictures, heart. We've lost our heart, yet, ironically, like the story's Tin Woodsman, we can take a trip to Oz to get more.

To commemorate the return engagement, the film's official Web site -- still available -- offers numerous photos, historical posters, and a wide collection of WAV sound clips. You'll also be fascinated by the background material, including cast notes and the production's timeline.

In our marvelous age of the Internet, what could be more pleasing than clicking on a hyperlink labeled "There's no place like HOME."
