During the past few weeks, I often put aside Y2K fears to deal with my sadness over the abrupt retirement of Charles M. Schulz, effective tomorrow.
As far as I'm concerned, he's one of
the gods of American Humor. My entire conscious life has been enriched by him, his l'il
folks, and that strange beagle -- the greatest dog I ever had.
Thank you, Mr. Schulz, for Snoopy, my pal and significant comedy mentor.
And, thank you for your kids who taught me as much as I ever learned in a classroom. I suspect I was a better child because of the moral teachings and exemplary intelligence of Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy and the others. They stimulated my mind, polished my edges, and provoked my delight.
The 12/9/73 Sunday strip is one of my all-time favorites. In it, Linus is watching TV as Lucy enters the room.
Lucy: What are you watching?
Linus: "Citizen Kane."
Lucy: I've seen it about ten times.
Linus: (intent on the film) This is the first time I've ever seen it...
Lucy: (exiting) "Rosebud" was his sled!
Linus: AAUGH!!
A few moments ago, I had a revelation. Peanuts is my Rosebud. Although, unlike Kane, I never left it behind -- and I never will.
