Hollis Gillespie / Mood Swing

''Not Your Normal Bleachy-Haired Honky Bitch''

From Mike Durrett, for About.com

Single mom, flight attendant, world traveler, unflinching gadabout: Terms to describe Hollis Gillespie, weekly humor columnist for ''Creative Loafing Atlanta'' and commentator on National Public Radio's ''All Things Considered."

Says the proprietor at HollisGillespie.com: ''You know you've reached a pinnacle in your writing career when the readership of 'Creative Loafing' rates you Atlanta‘s favorite columnist (2001 Reader's Choice, Best Columnist). So I'd like to thank the ocean of panting fans who bestowed that title upon me, and in response to their cries for the secret to my success, my answer is this: I whore my work hyperspeed. ... In short, I tackle every editor I see, stuff my clips under their door and hope they don't use them for canine Kotex the next time their dog is in heat. ... I litter my business card through the city like confetti. ... I brazenly flirt with people. I bat my eyes and ask them to open jars for me.''

Who doesn't? That column, by the way is ''Mood Swing,'' a clutch-the-throat tour of contemporary existence -- or whatever Hollis finds interesting this week. The choices may run to seedy encounters, but her observations are sculpted with such a finely-flossed saber-toothed wit -- hell yes, bring it on! Besides, how else would we learn about afternoons in strip clubs or guys being pigs or ''singing 'It's Raining Men' and tonguing someone wearing a rubber George W. Bush mask''?

So, let us paraphrase and join Hollis Gillespie as she's ''about to jump ass first into the wondrous crap fest that is the rest of (her life).''
