There's one golden rule of comedy: everything is funnier when Neil Patrick Harris does it. This rule was first laid forth in 1921 by Buster Keaton. At the time everybody was like, "Who's Neil Patrick Harris? Lay off the peyote, Buster, seriously," but now the rule is just another part of Keaton's inimitable legacy. But this means that when "How I Met Your Mother" isn't on TV and Neil isn't hosting the Tony Awards or anything, all comedy is suboptimal. Fortunately you can mainline NPH with his Twitter stream, and never get stuck with second best.
