Overboard Comic Strip

Wednesday July 19, 2006
The Funny Site of the Day -- During the current frenzy surrounding Pirates of the Caribbean: Depp Man's Dingy, in theatres, I've been storming the beaches of far-off Internet locales looking for related humorous treasure to share with you, mate. Then, it occurred to me there's gold buried in front of my eyes. I've grinned at it daily for more than a dozen years.

Overboard is Chip Dunham's imaginative comic strip, a loopy look at old-fashioned pirates going through the motions in a modern world. They've got the hats, the swords, the ship, the talking dog, the non-talking dog, the sea monsters, of course, but they also have a very nice on-deck vegetable garden, blow-up baby pool, and barbecue grill.

Sure, there are dangerous confrontations and duels with pirate competitors and stowaway bunnies and mice, but mostly the bad boys play tricks on each other, slackers in the face of violence. When Overboard isn't a metaphor for everyman's quest to be a workplace deadbeat, it's just plain silly -- the good kind of silly.

Overboard, "nominated for 'Best Comic Strip' in 1993 by the members of the National Cartoonists Society," says Universal Press Syndicate, can be accessed up-to-the-minute at AOL, which maintains an aaaarrchive of previous booty.
