Year of the Dog!: The 100 Greatest Dogs of Pop Culture History
Tuesday January 31, 2006
The Funny Site of the Day -- The current Chinese New Year contains 365 days of mutts. To celebrate, retroCRUSH pounded the trails of American taste to fetch the hundred hounds we've embraced most.
We can quibble on the rankings. For examples, 101 Dalmatians and Asta (of "The Thin Man" series and "Bringing Up Baby," who single-pawedly created a national boom on Wire-Haired Fox Terriers) should not roll over in the bottom 15. Nevertheless, the images in this reasoned assessment provide a big dish of memories and "good boy, good girl" smiles.
It's tail-wagging (Tom) terrific for me to see Manfred the Wonder Dog, Auggie Doggie, Rowlf, Spot, and Droopy included, but Dino Flintstone, who is adorable, is no canine. His place would better enshrine comic strip classic "Krazy Kat's" omitted protector, Officer Pupp.
I'd love to make a case for Popeye's magical sidekick, Eugene the Jeep, who is certainly doggy-like, but, alas, he belongs atop "The Two Greatest Jeeps of Pop Culture History." Hmm, when exactly is The Year of the Jeep?
I'm breaking a yummy in half, tossing a piece to curator Robert Berry and the other to the top dog, the obvious and deserved choice for Number One.
