New, Nutty, and Noteworthy

Look for these humorous DVD releases in stores: "Because of Winn-Dixie," "Kung Fu Hustle," "The Muppet Show - Season One (Special Edition)," "Oh Heavenly Dog," "The Cosby Show - Season One," and "The Complete Thin Man Collection."
"Because of Winn-Dixie" -- Jeff Daniels stars in the best-selling novel's lightly comic adaptation of a girl in a tiny Florida town who adopts a dog she names after a grocery store. (Begrudgingly, I guess Winn-Dixie is a better name for a dog than "The Beef People.")

"Kung Fu Hustle" -- Extremely violent action-comedy goes for big, over-the-top sight gags reminiscent of Looney Tunes cartoons. Some swell laughs, but the movie doesn't know when to kick itself off the screen.

"The Muppet Show - Season One (Special Edition)" -- Remastered Kermit, Miss Piggy, Fozzie Bear, and their felt friends welcome guest stars (circa 1976) in 24 episodes of Jim Henson's beloved universe, plus the original pilot, "Sex and Violence!"

"Oh Heavenly Dog" -- In 1980, older moviegoers were disappointed with this Chevy Chase comedy concerning a murdered private detective who returns to life as a pup. Their miscalculation was the project is more suitable as a vehicle for Benji the dog. In that vein, the film is an amiable family adventure. I'm adding it to my rental queue for another glimpse (at Jane Seymour. Shhh, don't tell my wife.)
(Price comparison not available.)
"The Cosby Show - Season One" -- Yet another Bill Cosby series was thought doomed by showbiz insiders until it premiered and became one of TV's most successful sitcoms ever. The first two dozen 1984-85 episodes are here with a 2002 salute. Will Cockroach enter and sign-in, please?

"The Complete Thin Man Collection" -- All six of the very popular MGM mystery comedies of the '30s and '40s are presented with bonus materials, including cartoons of the era. William Powell and Myrna Loy are the hilarious married detectives, Nick and Nora Charles, one of Hollywood's finest screen teams, aided by their sleuthing pooch, Asta. Genuine classics and oft revisited blueprints for today's entertainments.
