Howard Morris Comedy Videos Online

Wednesday May 25, 2005
THE FUNNY SITE OF THE DAY -- Howard Morris, the wild comic actor, voice artist, and comedy director, died May 21 at age 85. He's most remembered for his indelible connection to "The Andy Griffith Show" in the role of hillbilly goofball Ernest T. Bass. Amazingly, Morris appears in only five of the series' 249 episodes as what Deputy Fife (of all people) calls "a nut." His character was so popular and overpowering that Griffith said they had to resist the urge to feature Ernest T. since he changed the focus of the show. (Morris continued as a director for the sitcom.)

Earlier, Howard Morris was a regular cast member (and contributing writer) on comedian Sid Caesar's legendary comedy-variety programs, "Your Show of Shows" and "Caesar's Hour." The exhilarating 11 minutes of "This Is Your Story," their sketch spoofing TV's "This Is Your Life," have long been the first images to pop into my mind whenever thinking of Howie Morris. That's saying a lot because I truly love him as Ernest T. Bass, as well as the horrendously henpecked father of Julius Kelp in Jerry Lewis' "The Nutty Professor."
