Humor Watch

Tuesday June 29, 2004
Here's what I've been stalking, assessed heavily on humorous content.
"The Terminal" (2004) -- A sweet, Capraesque Steven Spielberg comedy. Upon landing in New York, a foreign tourist (Tom Hanks) becomes a man with no country, forcing his world to shrink to long term detainment inside the bustling airport concourse.
"Curb Your Enthusiasm": The Complete Second Season (2001) -- Hands down, my favorite new-to-me sitcom series. Star and scribe Larry David weaves tightly plotted comedy of errors through star-studded Hollywood locales. The fine cast adlibs unflinching dialogue with gusto for big laughs.
"Bubba Ho-tep" (2002) -- Elderly Elvis Presley (Bruce Campbell) and John F. Kennedy (Ossie Davis) battle a killer ghoul in a nursing home. Spunky and spooky.
"Monk" (2004) -- The third TV season is underway and humming on all cylinders. Tony Shalhoub makes his obsessive compulsive detective warm and funny, as he suffers through the solutions to crackerjack mysteries.
"The Long, Long Trailer" (1954) -- Lucille Ball and Desi Arnaz in what, with a few minor alterations, is essentially "I Love Lucy": The Movie. "Tacy" and "Nicky" ("Lucy" and "Ricky" lights) are honeymooners slapsticking their modern mobile home across mountains and the wild West. Reportedly, MGM's highest grossing comedy to that date.
(Single star = Poor; 2 = Fair; 3 = Good; 4 = Very Good; 5 = Exceptional.)
