I Used to Believe

Thursday October 23, 2003
THE FUNNY SITE OF THE DAY -- ''The Childhood Beliefs Site'' explains itself: ''... A collection of ideas that adults thought were true when they were children. It will remind you what it was like to be a child, fascinated and horrified by the world in equal parts.''

More than 16,000 beliefs have been compiled into categories: Animals, At Home, Bad Habits, Body Functions, Body Parts, Death, Food, Grown-ups, Kids, Language, Make-Believe, Media, Music, Nature, Neighborhood, Religion, School, Science, Sex, The Law, The Past, The World, Time, Transport, and the ever-popular Toilets.

Some ''I Used to Believe' examples:

• ''My dad told me that often on his subway trip to work in NYC, he would see Mr. Magoo on the same train. He really meant Jim Backus, who did the voice of Mr. Magoo. But I always pictured the cartoon character sitting amongst real people on the train.''

• ''I used to think that having a baby was totally random and the only way to make sure they didn't come was to hold your stomach really tight so there was no room. Walking around in fourth grade holding your stomach gets tiring after awhile.''

• ''I had a roommate that believed (when she was a child) that there were people that worked in the 'poopie factory' and they would clean the water. She thought they lived under the ground below the toilet, so she would flush letters and candy to them so they would not get lonely. She said the toilet was constantly clogged and her Dad always wondered why.''
