Web Humor Roundup

Tuesday March 31, 2009
Here's a nice sampling of what you can uncover on the Web, humorwise, if you spend 6-8 hours clicking and spelunking for laughs. The good stuff from my average day:

  • 30 Funny Twitter Comics -- A long, solid page of cartoons, courtesy of Webdesigner Depot, tickling the Twitter experience.
  • Seen on Twitter: @the_gman, @McBud, and @emailcopywriter passed around: "Chuck Norris destroyed the periodic table, because he only recognizes the element of surprise."
  • Cat Wants Aquarium Fish -- Ha! A quickie clip I had to add to The Funny Video of the Day.
  • About.com Weird News Nude News: "Japanese law professor moons court, threatens judge, now faces four months for contempt." Welcome to the Gland of the Rising Moon.
  • SpongeBob SquarePants vs. The Big One -- Golly, sounds ominous, but this cartoon does feature The Johnny Depp. Yep. Hep! [via Dave & Thomas and YouTube]
  • April Fool's Day Primer -- Guide David Emery examines the traditions at his Urban Legends site. Not a laugh riot, but interesting and will make your pranks convulsively hilarious in comparison! You go girl / guy / phantasm!
  • Anytime with Bob Kushell Featuring Bryan Cranston -- The wacky Crackle video series presents its latest five-minute talk show with the star of Breaking Bad. Gotta love the band.
  • Chad's Letters: Ludicrous Complaints -- Chad Bradley told me, "I've written a load of ridiculous complaint letters to companies - like telling IKEA I found a portal to Paris in their sofa, or claiming I found a shark in my mineral water. The companies replied, and quite a few are up on the Web..." at RollZero.

I always love a good letter and his correspondence to Whiskas is extra tasty.

  • 'Man Foils Bank Robbery After Assuming It Was an April Fool' -- A Telegraph.co.uk news report:
"When [robber] Davidson said to him 'I've got a gun I will shoot you,' [customer] Andrew replied 'go on then shoot me' and grabbed the bag from his hands."
  • 'Nature > Octomom' - From Atom's Children of the Blog, she's got nothing on natural supermoms The Octopus, Sea Louse, and Surinam Toads. (I dated a few of the latter during my radio days. Groupies.)

    Author Ian Cheesman on Octomom:

"...She's become something of a circus (which is fitting since her uterus was essentially a clown car)."
  • 'Who's on First?' 2009 Reboot -- Punchline Magazine pops this one over to you:
"On a recent visit to the nationally-syndicated Bob and Tom Show, comedian Paul Mecurio — a show regular — premiered his updated version of legendary comedy team Abbott and Costello’s famous baseball-themed sketch, 'Who’s on First.' To give it that 2009 feel, Mecurio shaped the humor around what baseball is really all about these days."

Your Daily Cute

Monday March 30, 2009
The Funny Site of the Week -- For several months, I've been following Your Daily Cute's alerts in my Twitter neighborhood because we share a "love of all things cuddly, furry, squishy, and edible." I think they may also be smitten with my dimples.

What's so great for me is the preponderance of kitty videos the Cute uncovers. I am a sucker for feline hijinks and have recently found myself branching out into hamsters. Those critters are adorable, furry delights, rubbing up against my funny bone. We've been treated to Hammy the Hamster Goes Organic, Silly Hamster Stashes a Carrot, and Bob the Hamster and a Spaghetti, none hard to swallow.

Mostly, The Daily Cute features animals in home movies, but topics and items other than streaming videos (i.e., photographs, jokes) are included in this daily, frequently updated blog.

Currently in my Cute queue of must-see PC are Jaws Ferrets, Serious Cat Sends S.O.S. Message, Rocky the Cat Boxer, Kingsford the Piglet Goes to the Beach, Remote Control Mouse: Toy or Terror? and 5000 Duckies on Parade.

For a taste, here's a newly-discovered favorite: Cat in a Vase.

Prowling for Pranks for April Fool's

Saturday March 28, 2009
We're getting excited with the big April Fool's Day hysteria not far away. I've been rehearsing all of my favorite pranks. That dribble glass kills me. Ha, that is so funny! Anyone know how I can get grape juice stains out of my sweatshirt?

I've been snooping around the Web for virtual versions of the classic American comedy tricks. I'm crestfallen I couldn't find a joy buzzer. This is about as close as I could get.

While looking for virtual whoopie cushions, I was reminded that Whoopi Goldberg seriously considered the stage name "Whoopi Cushion," but her mother, Mom Cushion, talked her out of it. Go figure.

I remembered this fun little Makin' Whoopie online toy from Nickelodeon, simulating the fart-tastic exploding bladder experience. Or, you could always watch Joy on The View.

I couldn't put my finger on fake vomit. I could, however, share an instructional epic, currently appearing on YouTube: How2 Fake a Vomit at the Family Picnic. Wear a bib.

Now, if we can't locate actual real fake vomit, we'll just have to fake fake vomit ourselves.

As it so happens, our very own About.com Guide to Chemistry, Anne Marie Helmenstein, has cooked up a recipe for "Edible Fake Barf!"

Incredible.

When you're done and smacking your lips, a bargain in the barfin', I might add, keep telling yourself that Anne -- yes, our Anne -- is a Ph.D!

Tweet Treats: A Litter of Twitter

Friday March 27, 2009
Twitter is a great source of Web humor. Below are actual tweets (posts) I've read recently and, perhaps, retweeted (reposted) with additions. I've edited several of them slightly for clarity, which might alter the maximum 140 characters counts, as seen in this article, but not on Twitter. The originating tweeps (writers) are quote marked. My comments are not.
  • @mkhammer asks "Best Internet list...ever?" Like, yeah! 50 ANIMALS WHO HATE BATHS: http://bit.ly/TQCy I'm #51, unless there's a squeaky toy.
  • @cwalken sez "I am now invited to a dog wedding. I don't have the words to make that stupider than it sounds. They're registered at Whiskers."
  • Ha!: @rainnwilson shares: "SIZE MATTERS! Make those teeny tiny wimpy URLs really get her attention at EnormousURL.com"
  • I've seen numerous mentions of @GreatHairGuy recently. Not clued in, I clicked his profile. Big laugh. B-)
  • @jimgaffigan sez "I want to tour Europe & only perform in cities named after food: Bologna, Hamburg, Frankfurt, Dijon & Long Island Ice tea."
  • @islandprincess2, @prattdanny, @alcoholichumor said, "A termite goes into a bar & asks 'Is the bar tender here?'"
  • @gumpreza shares "@TeleprompterOne - Barack's Teleprompter on Twitter? I love it!"
  • @zudfunck to @ThatKevinSmith: "This is ThatZuDfunck. Got my cable bill & you owe me $5.99 for ZACK AND MIRI MAKE A PORNO. PayPal is cool."
  • @AnimalPlanet shares "Philly street closures for toad mating migration." Must be a spring break story. http://snurl.com/e2q08
  • @someecards: "My spring cleaning involves deleting pornography links that are no longer deranged enough to titillate me." http://bit.ly/KDBam
  • @AnimalPlanet: Photo of the Day: Snow Kitty - http://snurl.com/dxaj2
  • Another snooty Hollywood star, @michaelianblack sez: "My toenail fungus looks particularly speckled this morning." Braggart.

Comedy Central Gone Wild! Funny Videos Gone Wild!

Thursday March 26, 2009
The handlers of the TV cut-ups sent me a bulletin in time for spring break, promising "the newest, wildest, raunchiest videos!"

Research being what I am all about, I forced myself to go take a look -- and another --- and another -- and a shower, but not in that order. Here's what I uncovered on my w00ty call:

  • Girls Gone Jon! -- From The Daily Show, Hollywood's leading ladies join Jon Stewart in a retrospective of appearances. Sandra Bullock, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Anne Hathaway, Uma Thurman, Halle Berry, Angelina Jolie, and Charlize Theron guest.
  • Girls Gone Colbert! -- Archival interviews from Stephen's Report, featuring feminists Jane Fonda, Gloria Steinem, Shere Hite, Ariel Levy, Caitlin Flanagan, Arianna Huffington, and Paulina Porizkova (one fabulous babe).
  • RENO 911! Gone Wild! -- Case studies from the cop files include clips of Nudist Future Shock, Helpful 'Hotty's,' Panty Raid, and Drunk Bust.
  • South Park Gone Wild! -- Margaritaville, the latest complete episode, is on tap. Sounds like drinking!
  • Jim Gaffigan Gone Wild! -- A goodly collection of silly shorts, plus stand-up comedy footage from Jim's King Baby special, such as the sensual Most Beautiful Thing on Earth. And that would be bacon.

Bunny Yawns

Saturday March 21, 2009
The Funny Site of the Day -- I will type this entry as soon as I can manage to do so. The mere thought of yawning bunnies is making me yawn like crazy. I guess that's due to the power of suggestion and my big floppy ears.

Talking Egg has compiled an impressive photo gallery of rabbits in the act of fighting off the snooze. There are more than 80 cute, warm, and cuddly critters to behold. Can you keep your mouth shut?

5ives - Merlin's Lists of Five Things

Friday March 20, 2009
The Funny Site of the Day -- Merlin Mann's eclectic mini-lists of random observations and drollery have been making me smile for years. During research on this article, he made me laugh out loud four times. That, by the way, is four more than most humor sites.

The Official Bob and Ray Website

Thursday March 19, 2009
The Funny Site of the Day -- For four decades, the legendary comedians, Bob Elliott and Ray Goulding, worked together in radio, television, films, advertising, print, and Broadway. Their gentle and subtle humor, largely adlibbed, teased American life, especially the broadcasting staples of soap operas, commercials, and news interviews.

Remarkably, the comic material, which dates as far back as the 1940s, retains most of its freshness today and, certainly, all of its sublime loopiness. At BobAndRay.com, find a bonanza of their recordings for purchase and home giggling, but, for now, listen online to an assortment of free sample comedy clips featuring Chris Elliott's dad and Uncle Ray. There's also a photograph gallery, plus The Bob and Ray Permanent Archive of articles and memorabilia.

Bob and Ray were trailblazers into modern radio comedy. Two naturally funny guys who cut up between the records. I can attest that during my years on the air, the gentlemen were prime beacons and spirits guiding the path. The occasional clever moments we might achieve, the ones somewhat reminiscent of the team, remain among my happiest memories from those microphone days.

Frank's Vinyl Museum: The Internet Home of Weird Records

Wednesday March 18, 2009
The Funny Site of the Day -- Get up from that chair and run! Run like there is no tomorrow! Take your ears with you! Do it! DO IT NOW!

Laverne and Shirley, Mae West, Kojak, the Shat, Beatle Barkers, and many others are about to [*cough*] sing. Let's go! Move it! There may be POLKAS!

OK, I warned you. It's at your peril that you're still here.

Buy some earmuffs. Put 'em on.

Better be safe, wear two pair.

This alleged music in Frank's Vinyl Museum may render you sterile. Proceed at your own risk. I can't be responsible for eardrums glowing in the dark.
